About the tour
The end of the Second World War marked the end of the old Breslau, the city’s greatest catastrophe, and also the most significant turning point in its history. Towards the end of the war, Breslau was declared a fortress and, along with other cities, was tasked with defending Berlin against the Soviet advance. Just three months of fighting would transform the city beyond recognition. The stubbornness of the German command, which chose to fight to the very end, is why Wrocław is still referred to today as the last enclave of Nazi Germany. During this walk, we will trace the key battle sites from the siege of the Wrocław Fortress and delve into the darker stories and the lives of those who played the most significant roles in Breslau’s defence. This will be a journey from the Nazi stronghold of Breslau to post-war Wrocław, which was painstakingly reborn amidst the rubble. It was precisely as a result of post-war decisions that a complete population exchange took place, and the city transformed from the German Breslau into the Polish Wrocław that you see today.
